Is There Such a Thing as a Brindle Great Dane Puppy?

Home / Puppies / Is There Such a Thing as a Brindle Great Dane Puppy?

When you’re choosing a new dog, there are a lot of things to consider. Some people choose puppies based on their temperament, whereas others pick dogs that are family-friendly and fun. And, of course, there are many people who choose dogs – like the brindle Great Dane puppy – based on their beautiful coats!

In this article, we’re going to talk a bit about the brindle Great Dane puppy and the brindle coat itself. Brindle is not the most common coat, but it’s certainly one of the most beautiful and unique.

What Is Brindle?

If you’re not quite sure what a brindle coat is, allow us to enlighten you. Brindle is a specific type of dog coat. It doesn’t occur in many dogs, so if you’re lucky enough to scoop up a brindle Great Dane puppy, then you’ll have a unique companion.

Many describe the brindle coat as being similar to tiger stripes. The coat has a base color which is often lighter. The tiger stripes themselves are often a darker shade.

Dog researchers aren’t quite certain exactly what causes the brindle coat to appear. Most agree, however, that brindle is a form of genetic mutation. What this also means is that not all dogs can have brindle coats, since not all dogs have the proper genes that can be ‘activated’ to express the brindle color.

There are several different types of brindle coats, as well. There are blue brindle, chocolate brindle, and regular brindle coats. Some dogs may also have brindle markings.

The majority of dogs who can be brindle are short-haired dogs like the Great Dane. However, there are rare cases of long-haired puppies like German Shepherds having brindle coats.

The brindle coat is also known to occur in other animals – again, many with short hair, or no hair whatsoever. Other animals that can express the brindle coat include the horse, cat, and various rodents and lizards.

Can I Get a Brindle Great Dane Puppy?

You can, indeed, get a brindle Great Dane puppy! According to the AKC, there are a number of different standard colors for the Great Dane breed. These include:

  • Black (registration number 007)
  • Black & white (registration number 019)
  • Blue (registration number 037)
  • Brindle (registration number 057)
  • Fawn (registration number 082)
  • Harlequin (registration number 112)
  • Mantle (registration number 431)
  • Merle (registration number 131)
  • White (registration number 199)

According to this same information, Great Danes cannot have the brindle markings that some other breeds are known for.

However, you should be aware that a brindle coat doesn’t tell you anything about the temperament or personality of your dog. These are characteristics that will depend on the breed, the way your puppy is raised, and the quality of their food.

Some breeders have suggested that brindle dogs may be more susceptible to certain health problems such as deafness and visual issues. However, this occurs only in rare cases.

Conclusion

The brindle Great Dane puppy is a beautiful animal. Brindle is a rare coat color, so if you see a brindle puppy, be sure to scoop it up. It’s important that you take the time to learn how to properly raise your Great Dane puppies.
