Salmon Oil for Dogs

The benefits of salmon oil for humans are well-documented; there is no questioning that. So, is it beneficial for dogs too?

Many people swear by the health benefits of fish oil, primarily because its contains omega-3 fatty acids. Fish oil contains two main fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are not produced by fish on their own. If these acids are found in their body, it's only because of the fact that they feed on microalgae, which produce these acids. Salmon oil is a type of fish oil which is extracted from salmons and marketed either in the form of a gel capsule or liquid.

Like us, even dogs need these fatty acids as they too cannot produce them in their body. Apart from salmon oil, omega-3 fatty acids are also found in nuts and beans, but the likelihood of dogs being allergic to them are high and thus, salmon oil supplements are preferred over them.

Health Benefits

Sea food is considered to be an extremely healthy source of nutrients, as there are traces of iodine, calcium, iron, as well as vitamin E in it. These are some nutrients that are required by dogs while growing, which is much throughout their lives. In fact, omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in salmon oil, help dogs keep their coat, joints, organs, and other systems healthy and sharp.

When humans consume too much fatty acids, they tend to become obese and overweight. Won't dogs suffer from the same conditions in similar circumstances? The answer to this is very simple, the breakdown of fats in dogs is not similar to that in humans and therefore, there are no chances of your dog putting on weight because of salmon oil! According to the reviews, there are many brands which market this product in the form of liquid and capsules. So, you get to choose in whichever way you prefer.
  • Salmon oil improves the coat and skin condition of the dog by making it shiny and soft. It also reduces the chances of skin problems and dog allergies. It helps in producing more collagen and doesn't let dry skin affect the dog's coat.
  • When you have moderate dosage of about 1000 mg per 10 lbs of dog weight, you will surely keep your dog away from joint problems, like arthritis. It also reduces inflammation and pain in dogs, and keeps them active and healthy.
  • Owing to its anti-inflammatory property, it is also beneficial for various kidney problems in canines.
Side Effects

Salmon oil can have a few negative effects on the dog's health. While these effects are not very serious and can be controlled before the situation worsens, you have to make sure your dosage is as prescribed/appropriate. These include ...
  • Changes in stool consistency.
  • Gaining weight without stopping or dog obesity (can be reduced with exercise).
  • Suffering from bad breath.
  • Other non-serious problems, like stomach pain, nausea, and giddiness.
While there is no questioning the fact that salmon oil is beneficial for dogs, we would recommend consulting a vet before you begin adding it to your dog's food (or the moment you see any of the aforementioned side effects.)
