A Guide on Taking the Best Puppy Pictures

Home / Dog Supplies / Dog Gear / A Guide on Taking the Best Puppy Pictures

The internet is useful for a lot of different things. We can share information, learn new things, communicate across the globe – and, of course, look at cute puppy pictures.

But what if you want to add your own puppy pictures to the millions that are already online? You’re going to want to make sure that you take the best possible pictures.

We’ve put together a brief guide on how to take fantastic puppy photos. Once you’ve finished this article you’ll be able to pump out pictures that catch people’s eyes.

How to Take the Best Puppy Pictures

Taking puppy pictures doesn’t have to be hard – just point and shoot. However, if you want to take the best possible pictures, there are a few things that you might want to consider.

Check Your Settings!

The first thing you should do if you want to take professional-quality pictures is to learn about your camera settings. There are a lot of different things you can do with these settings.

  • Using the ‘action shot’ setting can be useful if you’re planning to take a picture of your dog while it’s running and jumping around.
  • If you’re going to be printing your photos, you should use at least 200 dpi. If you’re going to be uploading your pictures solely to the internet then you don’t have to use such a high resolution – 72 dpi is usually enough.

Plan Your Pictures

If you think ahead of time, you can plan for some truly awesome puppy shots. This is especially true if you’re photographing your own dogs. If your dog follows any sort of routine, or if it has a habit of doing something cute in a specific place or at a certain time, then bring your camera with you in preparation!

Consider Some Editing Software

It would be nice to believe that all the pictures on the internet were just shot by amazing photographers. Don’t get me wrong – many of them were. However, a huge number of photos have been spruced up with the use of editing software.

Programs like PhotoShop can run you out of money, but they’re powerful tools for enhancing photos. Free apps like Gimp are a bit less powerful but they won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Set and Setting

You want to make sure that your photos are shot in an appropriate place. There are a few things to consider.

  • The lighting is one of the most important factors of any photo. If the lighting is nice then your picture will probably turn out better than it would otherwise.
  • Make sure there’s not too much background clutter. Too much clutter can take the focus away from your subject (aka your beautiful puppy).

Conclusion

Taking great puppy pictures doesn’t have to be hard, but it can take a bit of patience and skill. Now that you know the basics, get out there and start shooting!

Getting a good camera is instrumental for taking good pictures. If you want to get extra crafty then you can consider doing a photo shoot with props – like these homemade dog bandanas.
