If you know how to make dog treats on your own, you can save your pet dog all the troubles that he may face after eating commercial treats. Not to forget, it is also one of the best experiences in the culinary world.
Like humans, even canines won't mind delicious treats once in a while! Similar to other dog food, these treats are specifically made for dogs and thus, include all the necessary nutrients required for their health. They are usually sugar coated to make them tasty for the dog's taste buds, so as to ensure that he keeps coming back for more.
They are made in the form of bars or biscuits, which are usually bone shaped, as dogs love feasting on yummy bones! Other than obedience training, these treats are also used to show love and appreciation for the pet.

Homemade Dog Treats

The treats can be made in various shapes and sizes, and by using healthy ingredients, their quality too can be controlled by you. Often, it so happens that there are large quantities of harmful and allergic ingredients in commercial treats.
If you are preparing them at home, you know what ingredients your dog is fond of and, what ingredients are not good for your dog's health. Ingredients like artificial sweeteners, raisins, flavoring agents, and colors should be minimally used in dog food. Instead, you can use meat, organic flour, and sugar-free sweeteners to make these homemade treats!

Cinnamon and Apple Cookies

  • 1 large apple
  • 1½ cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup of water
  • ¼ cup honey
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup oatmeal
You will have to cut the apple and grind it in a blender to prepare a paste. Then take this paste in a large mixing bowl, add some water, cinnamon, honey, and oatmeal to it, and mix it properly with a wooden spoon. Add organic wheat flour to this paste to make it into a dough.
You can first mix it with a spoon and then, when it is thick enough, knead it with your fingers, as the ingredients have to blend together. Roll out the dough to make a flat surface and with a cookie cutter cut the desired shapes.
In a baking dish, place un-greased baking sheets and sprinkle some flour on them, and place the cookies on the sheet. Bake them for about 30 minutes in a preheated oven at 325°F, remove them, and let them cool overnight!

Meatball Treats

  • ½ lb ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 finely grated carrot
  • ½ cup bread crumbs (whole wheat)
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 tablespoons grated cheese
In a large mixing bowl, combine all these ingredients and mix them thoroughly. Make meatballs and place them on a baking sheet greased with cooking spray. Place the tray in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes at 350°F, till they are brown and firm.
Remove them from the oven and let them cool down; store them in the refrigerator if possible. If not meatballs, these ingredients can also be used for making dog biscuits!

Peanut Butter Treats

  • 1¼ cup flour
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 teaspoons of peanut butter
Add all these ingredients, except the flour, in a large mixing bowl and blend it well. Then add the flour and knead it till it turns into soft dough. Roll it and cut out cookies, place them on a greased baking sheet, and bake them for about 30 minutes at 350°F. Cool these healthy homemade treats and refrigerate them for your little dogie!
So, give your pet dog a yummy treat and let him enjoy the perfect 'dog's life'!
